Programme notes:
Sleigh Ride, subtitled Winter Night, was first written as a piano piece which Delius performed at Edward Grieg's Christmas Eve party in Leipzig in 1887. It was scored for orchestra in 1889 but not performed along with two other short tone poems, Spring Morning and Summer Evening until 1946, at the Thomas Beecham Delius Festival.
It consists of a portrayal of an approaching sleigh, a central section of contrasting tranquil nature, a repeat of thwew openg sleigh ride a nd a short coda referring back to the central, lyrical music.
Performance notes:
Trumpet 1 is a piccolo part.
Trumpet 4 requires a flugel
The sleigh bells are essential but other percussion is optional.
