Programme notes:
The history of the English carol is rooted in secular tradition and the ancient Wassail melodies which Christmas revellers sang and danced to celebrate the season.
This one tells of the birth of Jesus on a 'cold and frosty morning, but at the same time suggests that the hosts provide refreshment for the singers on a chilly night.

This arrangement begins with the chiming of the hour and also includes a ghostly episode.

Performance notes:
Play the 'bell' passages with strong articulation but back off immediately.

Much of the texture requires leggiero playing; endeavour to keep a bright stlye but without any heaviness of articulation.

Percussion is optional but desirable.
