Programme note:
Radetzky March, composed in 1848 was dedicated to the Austrian Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz.
At its first performance to an audience of Austrian officers it prompted spontaneous clapping and foot stamping, a tradition that remains today whenever it is played.
It is frequently used as an encore in programmes of music by the Strauss family, most notably at the Vienna New Year Concert.

Performance note:
The percussion is optional but preferable. If percussion is not available omit the first 8 bars.
Trumpet 1 is a piccolo part.
Play in a festive manner with vigourous rhythm and clean, light production.
Make sure that accompaniment figures have vitality but be careful that they do not overbalance the melody lines.
Let each section have a distinct dynamic. The louder sections can be enthusistically played; keep the contrasting quieter passages under control but without losing the march character.
