Programme notes:

This set of three pieces provides the young brass player with some short and technically straightforward music, which can be played alone, or as a set for concert performance.

St. Anthony Chorale: a movement form a Divertimento for wind, originally scored for oboes, horns and bassoons. It is not certain whether the tune is original or whether it is an arrangement by Haydn f an existing melody. It was later used by Brahms for his ‘Variations on the St. Anthony Chorale’.

March of the Priests: a solemn march from the opera, ‘The Magic Flute’ in which the Chief Priest, Sarastro and his followers enter a palm grove, surrounded my pyramids.

Ode to Joy: the main theme of the last, choral movement of the 9th symphony in which Beethoven sets the words of Schiller’s ‘Ode to Joy’. Nowadays used as the European anthem due the expression of the idea of universal brotherhood in the verse.

Performance notes:

The Ode to Joy may be found to be too arduous for very young players. The cued parts may be used to help share the load as required. Also complete sections may be omitted for a shorter version, e.g. the beginning to B; B to E; or E to G.
