This set of 3 dances provides the young player with some short, tuneful and technically straightforward pieces, which can be played alone or as a suite for concert performance, each dance being of a different character.

Performance notes:

Rachel’s Reel: try to establish a good swing to the music by taking care over the rhythms. When the lower parts have held notes be sure they do not sustain too strongly for the tune. Make the articulations as marked in order to get a good style e.g. in the trombones after B.

Bessie’s Basse Dance: This also depends on god rhythmic feel to set the style. Make sure that the long; short, short rhythm is always crisp.

Felicity’s Fandango: Keep the melody lines bold and the accompaniment very rhythmic. Play all the dynamics and articulations carefully. Try to move the tempo smoothly but obviously forward in the final section to speed that sounds very exciting buy not out of control.
