Programme notes:

Spirituals, like folk songs, seem to lend themselves to all sorts of arrangements for varying combinations of timbres without losing their original charm and spirit.

This arrangement is for 8 B flat trumpets, its style being prompted by the words of the chorus: “The trumpet sound within my soul, I ain’t got long to stay here.” It is a small gesture in memory of three trumpet playing colleagues who died in the space of a few months in 1999/2000: Chris Horn, Paul Ringham and Philip Jones.

Performance notes:

Play with a gentle and expressive style throughout. Even at the loud dynamics do not overblow. The lead voice occurs in various instruments through the piece; make sure it always evident by balancing the supporting parts or countermelodies against it.

The Christopher Horn Trust

Proceeds from the sale of this piece will go to the trust, the aim of which is to advance the education of persons under the age of 25, who are full time students at a recognised college of music, in the art and technique of classical brass playing. The trust has been set up to honour the memory of Chris Horn, an exceptionally talented trumpet player, who died at the age of 25, having suffered form depression.
