20019 - O Know to End as to Begin from The Hour-Glass Irving Fine ( 1914-1962 ) arranged for 12-piece brass ensemble by Roger Harvey Difficulty: Medium Price: £25.00 Programme note: Although Irving Fine is not now so well known as his illustrious contemporaries, such as Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstien, he was highly thought of as a composer, pianist and teacher during his life. Copland praising its "elegance, style, finish and continuity". His earlier scores showed influences of Stravinsky's neo-classical style, with its generally tonal basis and moderate dissonance. The Hour-Glass, a set of 3 songs for a cappella chorus on texts by Ben Jonson, from which this piece comes, demonstrates this with its clean rhythmic gestures and insistent harmonic progressions. The verse for this song is:O know to end, as to begin; A minute's loss in love is sin. (These homours will the night outwear In their own pastimes here;) You do our rites much wrong In seeking to prolong These outward pleasures: The night hath other treasures Than these, though long concealed, Ere day to be revealed. Then know to end, as to begin; A minute's loss in Love is sin. Performance note: |
