Programme note:
Alexander Goedicke was born in Moscow into a family of musicians. He displayed an early aptitude for music, winning the Anton Rubinstein Prize in 1895 and establishing himself as a significant figure in Russian music circles as a teacher and composer despite his lack of formal training. The Trumpet Concerto in B-flat major, Op. 41 was composed in 1930, with the collaboration of the esteemed trumpeter Timofei Dokshizer. The piece is in a continuous single movement. It begins with a majestic introduction before the soloist enters with cadenza like flourishes. This material re-appears between the sections of the main allegro which has 2 main themes. The final section consists of a tutti repetitiion of the 2nd theme around which the solist weaves a triplet obligato, a long cadenza and a brief coda.
