Programme note: We Wish you a Merry Christmas is a traditional west country wassail song, used to ask for a much needed reward of refreshment by carol singers. Its modern popularity is due to an SATB arrangement by Arthur Warrell for his Bristol University students made in 1935 and immediately published by Oxford University Press. It has been the version of choice for choirs ever since. This version is largely a transcription of Warrell's arrangement with a few extra touches.Performance note: This arrangement can be played as an instrumental item or used to accompany the SATB version. If it is used in a choral setting the extra notes, marked optional, may be ommitted. Otherwise play them very lightly and supportiviely.
