Matthew Locke is best known for his theatre and instrumental music but also wrote anumber of anthems and motets. He was born at Exeter, and sang as a chorister of Exeter Cathedral from 1638 to 1641. In April, 1661 he was appointed composer to the Charles II's private band at a salary of forty pounds a year. He was "Deputy Master of the King's Musick" for the year 1676-77, but his salary at Court was so irregularly paid that on 24 July, 1676, he assigned £174. l0s. 7d. — three years' and three quarters' salary due to him — to one of his creditors.
This set of dances was probably written for the procession on the eve of Charles II's coronation.

Play in an elegant, rhythmic style. Some light ornamentation may be added on repeats. Tempos and dynamics are editorial and can be varied at the discretion of the players. |
