5051 - Lo He Comes Traditional arranged for brass quintet by Roger Harvey Difficulty: Medium Price: £20.00 Programme note: The text of this hymn, based on an earlier verse by John Cennick, was published by Wesley in 1758 in his Hymns of intercession for all Mankind. The sense of the words is derived from Revelation chapter 1, verse 7, which tells of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. It was considered to be one of the "Great Four Anglican Hymns" in a 19th century survey of hymnals and continues to be a favourite Advent hymn today. The tune Helmsley is attributed to Thomas Olivers, a Welsh Methodist preacher, hymn-writer, and friend of Wesley. The story goes that he based the tune on a popular Irish melody, 'Guardian angels, now protect me' which he heard being whistled in a Dublin street. |
