Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland
5056 - Nun Komm der Heiden Heiland Matin Luther arranged for brass quintet by Roger Harvey Difficulty: Medium/Difficult Price: £25.00 Programme note: The melody for Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, literally, Now come, Saviour of the heathen, has plainchant origins. The text and achorale setting of it was written by Martin Luther and was printed in the Erfurt Enchiridion of 1524. The chorale became a traditional hymn for the first Sunday of Advent and was much used by composers of the Baroque era, most notably Bach who returned to it several times and as a basis for chorale prelude and in sacred cantatas. The first verse of the text is: Savior of the nations, come; Virgin's Son, here make Thy home! Marvel now, O heaven and earth, That the Lord chose such a birth. This version adopts a meditative tone, attempting to develop a distant atmosphere reflecting the solemn but hopeful tone of Advent |
