This simple but very attractive, folk-like melody, with its words describing the scene in the stable on the first Christmas, has become a favourite children’s carol. Part of its charm is the ambiguous metre.

Performance notes:

Play gently and cantabile throughout. The solo flugel should not have to rush between the phrases; make sure the accompanying voices give time for comfortable breaths.
