Programme note:
This motet is from the 1597 publication, Sacrae Symphoniae. It was intended for use by a mixed ensemble of voices and instruments, with the instruments doubling vocal parts or substituing for them to create a splendid, colourful texture in keeping with the ceremonial occasion for which it was no doubt composed.
It is made up of a number of sections suggesting the use of contrasting groupings of voices and instruments, foreshadowing and undoubdtedly influencing the development of the Baroque concerto grosso.
O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands,
For the man shall be blessed who fears the Lord
The God of Israel, may He join you,
And may He be with you.
May He send you helpfrom His holy place
and from Zion.
May He bless you out of Zion,
He who made heaven and Earth.
Serve the Lord with Gladness.
Performance notes:
This arrangement may be played as an instrumental item or may be used to accompany voices. In the latter case, it may be considered suitable to tacet some sections for the instruments. Suggestions for this have been made in smaller notes.
