Notes: A colourful orchestration of Bartok's elementary piano set of Colinde Set 1(Romanian Christmas Carols). This is probably the first orchestral version of this piece. Although it is a simple end-to-end setting of the 10 short melodies it works as a complete movement, beginning with energy, relaxing into some tender moments and finishing with a flourish. The melodies have their roots in pagan winter solstice festivities so, although they are now also associated with the Christmas season, the set is appropriate for concerts throughout the year. It would make an excellent concert opener or a companion piece to a bigger Bartok work.
