Notes: Béla Bartók (1881-1945) Béla Bartók's Bagatelles, Op. 6 is a significant early work, composed in 1908. This set of fourteen short piano pieces showcases Bartók’s departure from late Romanticism and his movement towards a modernist style, influenced by folk music and innovative harmonic language. Bartók composed the Bagatelles during a period of intense creative exploration and Busoni described them as "something really new". In 1908, he had begun collecting folk songs from rural Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia, which profoundly influenced his compositional style. This period also saw the rise of modernism in music, with composers like Debussy and Schoenberg challenging traditional forms and harmonic language. Bartók’s Bagatelles reflect both his ethnomusicological interests and his engagement with the avant-garde trends of his time. The pieces are characterized by their brevity, ranging from less than a minute to a few minutes each, and their diverse moods and techniques. Although the set received mixed reviews upon their premiere, as their modernist elements were initially challenging for contemporary audiences, they are now recognized as a crucial step in Bartók’s development as a composer and are appreciated for their innovation and expressive depth. This is probably the first orchestration of the complete set though Bartok himself orchestrated No 14 as the 2nd of his 2 Portraits.
